One-Way Lightweight Export Pallets

Lightweight, non-returnable pallets built for single-trip shipping, cutting dead weight and cost while keeping enough strength for the journey.

  • ✅ Shipping across Europe
  • ✅ ISPM 15 treatment available
  • ✅ Our own sawmill in Galicia

A one-way pallet -also called a lightweight or export pallet- is a load base built to travel exactly once: it leaves the factory with the goods, crosses one or more borders, and is not expected to make its way back to the point of origin. Unlike a pool pallet such as the EPAL/EURO, the goal here isn't durability across dozens of use cycles; it's minimising dead weight and cost per unit while keeping enough strength for a single leg of transport, whether by road, sea, or air.

At Maderas Caamaño we build these pallets at our own sawmill in Berdoias, Vimianzo (A Coruña), using Galician pine of packaging-grade quality, nailed together rather than block-built, which speeds up production and keeps the unit price down. It's the usual choice for exporters, agri-food cooperatives, component manufacturers and logistics operators shipping palletised goods to a single destination who don't need, or can't arrange, to have the pallet returned or to run it through an exchange pool such as the European one.

We work with clients exporting from Spain to Portugal, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, the United Kingdom and Ireland, as well as to destinations outside the European Union, where phytosanitary treatment of wood packaging is a hard requirement rather than an option. Our direct link to the sawmill and to Galicia's forestry sector lets us adjust dimensions, weight and finish to each shipment, rather than offering a single one-size-fits-all model. It's also a practical fit for procurement teams comparing packaging costs line by line: when a pallet is only ever going to make one trip, paying for the durability of a multi-cycle pallet rarely makes commercial sense.

How we build the one-way pallet

The process starts at our own sawmill, where we process pine sourced in Galicia and grade it by quality for different uses. For one-way pallets we set aside industrial-grade timber: boards and blocks that don't need the appearance or thickness of furniture-grade wood, or of a pallet meant to last for years, but that do need enough strength to carry a load through a full transport leg without failing.

Assembly is done by nailing boards directly onto blocks or stringers, without the glued-block construction typical of an EPAL/EURO pallet. That difference in build is precisely what allows the finished weight and production cost to come down: fewer pieces, less timber per unit, and a faster assembly process. The result is a lighter pallet that more than makes up the freight saving, particularly on shipments where weight is billed and the packaging isn't coming back.

Each batch is built to the size and load our customer specifies, and we don't force every order into one standard format: if your goods suit a 1000x1200 mm pallet, or a non-standard size, better than the default, we adjust the design before production starts. Depending on the order, we can deliver pallets ready to load straight from the sawmill, or supply them unassembled in bundles to make better use of transport space en route to destination -an option many customers value when order volumes are large.

Materials and how the wood behaves

We use Galician pine as the base species, in line with our sawmill's core activity and with the timber actually available around Berdoias and Vimianzo. Pine offers a strength-to-weight balance well suited to one-way packaging: it's a comparatively light wood, easy to nail and work, and behaves predictably in relation to moisture when drying is properly controlled before assembly.

For this product we use industrial-grade timber rather than a top visual grade: boards may show knots, colour variation or minor surface irregularities that don't affect the pallet's function as a load base. That's a deliberate design choice, not a defect -on a one-way pallet, visual finish takes a back seat to unit cost and structural reliability.

Moisture content is kept within the ranges typical for export packaging, adjusted according to season and destination, to reduce the risk of warping or cracking during long-distance sea or road transport. On larger orders we run a visual check batch by batch before dispatch, setting aside pieces with defects that could affect structural strength, without applying the aesthetic standards used for higher-grade packaging.

Dimensional and quality standards

Although the one-way pallet is not manufactured to the EPAL/EURO exchange-pool specification, we do follow the dimensional conventions that make it easy to handle with forklifts, pallet trucks and standard racking across Europe: 800x1200 mm (European) and 1000x1200 mm (industrial) are the two most common formats, both compatible with most handling equipment and standard shipping containers.

If your operation needs something different -to fit a specific container, a machine on your production line, or bulky goods- we can build to custom dimensions, provided the order volume justifies it. In that case it helps to send us the exact size, the expected load, and whether the shipment needs a single or double deck ahead of time. We're happy to talk through trade-offs before committing to a production run -for instance, whether a slightly heavier deck board is worth it to avoid damage on a bumpy last-mile delivery, or whether a lighter build is safe given how the load will actually be handled.

  • Standard 800x1200 mm and 1000x1200 mm formats
  • Custom sizes available on prior request
  • Single or double-deck depending on load requirements
  • Compatible with standard forklifts, pallet trucks and containers

Beyond deck dimensions, we adjust board and block thickness to the expected load, avoiding an over-built pallet when goods are light and bulky, or reinforcing specific points when the load is heavy and concentrated.

To compare formats and performance against a pool pallet, you can also look at our European EPAL/EURO wood pallets, built to that system's specification for customers who do need to return or exchange their pallets.

Use cases by industry

The one-way pallet fits naturally into any operation where the shipment is a one-off, the destination doesn't handle packaging returns, or the cost of shipping the empty pallet back doesn't stack up against the price of a new one. It's common in agri-food and fresh produce exports, among component manufacturers shipping parts to a single customer, and among logistics operators consolidating loads for several consignees.

It's also a frequent choice for companies exporting outside the European Union, where wood packaging must meet specific phytosanitary requirements and, in many cases, there's no logistical case for bringing it back. Here, a lightweight pallet lets you meet the destination country's rules without over-specifying the packaging or paying for a product designed for many use cycles that, in this case, will never happen.

  • Agri-food and fresh produce exports
  • Single-trip industrial shipments
  • Consolidated loads for multiple consignees
  • Exports to destinations outside the EU
  • Building materials distribution
  • Sea-freight container shipments

We also work with machinery and capital-goods manufacturers shipping individual parts or assembly kits to an end customer abroad, where the pallet is simply part of the dispatch packaging rather than the later production process. Many of these shipments combine the pallet with industrial wood crates and packaging to protect individual parts or delicate components within the same container. Seasonal exporters -wine, fruit, and other agri-food producers with sharp shipping peaks around harvest- often favour this format too, since it lets them scale order volumes up and down without carrying the fixed cost of a returnable pallet fleet between campaigns.

Forestry origin and sustainability approach

The timber we use comes from Galicia's own forestry activity, a region with decades of woodworking tradition and one of the highest densities of forested land in Spain, where pine has long been a working material for construction, packaging and rural building alike. As a family-run sawmill, we buy and process wood sourced close to home, which shortens the distance between forest and finished product and gives us direct control over the raw material quality entering each batch.

We aim to work in line with the responsible forest management principles promoted by frameworks such as FSC and PEFC, favouring local Galician pine over timber shipped in from distant origins. We don't offer formal chain-of-custody forestry certification on this specific product, but we do offer a traceable, verifiable wood origin from our own sawmill -something many industrial packaging buyers value just as much as a certification mark.

Being a lightweight pallet also means less timber is used per unit than an equivalent block pallet, reducing the volume of raw material consumed per shipment. Offcuts and wood waste generated during production are put to use, where possible, as raw material for other lines in our catalogue, such as wood chips or firewood, cutting down on sawmill waste.

Export and logistics across Europe and beyond

We export from our facility in Berdoias, Vimianzo, to customers across Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, the United Kingdom and Ireland, with shipments arranged under common Incoterms -EXW, FOB or delivered- agreed according to the volume and destination of each order. Being lightweight and non-returnable, this pallet simplifies logistics compared with exchange-pool systems: there's no packaging return to arrange and no pool stock to reconcile, which matters especially to companies exporting occasionally or to a mix of destinations. It also avoids the administrative overhead of tracking how many pool pallets are owed back to a supplier or a customer across several shipments and several countries, which can become a real bookkeeping burden for exporters running frequent, low-volume loads.

For shipments to the United Kingdom, Switzerland or other destinations outside the European Union, wood packaging must comply with the ISPM 15 international phytosanitary standard, which governs heat treatment of wood used in packaging to prevent forest pests spreading between countries. We can prepare your pallets with heat treatment carried out in line with this standard's requirements, marked as appropriate, so your cargo isn't held up at customs over non-compliant packaging; if your shipment needs this, take a look at our ISPM 15 heat-treated export pallets. The requirements behind this standard are set by the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), the reference body for phytosanitary rules in international trade.

We also prepare the usual export paperwork and coordinate loading with carriers that regularly handle palletised freight to these destinations, including the option to combine a pallet order with other items from our catalogue in the same shipment. We prepare accompanying paperwork in Spanish and English when the destination requires it, and coordinate collection times with the carrier to match container or lorry departure dates, avoiding delays caused by packaging and cargo being out of sync.

Why choose Maderas Caamaño for your export pallets

We're a family-run sawmill and timber wholesaler in Vimianzo, A Coruña, with decades of activity in Galicia's forestry sector spanning timber trading, our own sawmilling, and forestry services. That background lets us offer one-way pallets with an internally controlled wood origin, rather than relying on intermediaries buying from third parties with no clear traceability back to a sawmill. That direct control also means we can be candid about lead times and stock availability rather than quoting figures we can't back up.

We produce standard and custom formats, adjust weight and construction to suit the load, and arrange ISPM 15 heat treatment whenever the export destination requires it. If your company ships to a single destination and doesn't need the packaging back, or if the cost of a pool pallet doesn't make sense against a lighter format, we can offer an alternative built for the actual journey your goods are making, not a generic standard designed for a different kind of operation.

Get in touch with your format, volume and destination and we'll put together a proposal with indicative lead times and delivery terms suited to your export operation. Enquiries are handled directly from the sawmill, without sales intermediaries adding to the cost, so the pricing and lead times we propose reflect the production capacity we actually have available at the time.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a one-way pallet and an EPAL/EURO pallet?

An EPAL/EURO pallet is built for an exchange pool and multiple use cycles, so it's block-built to a fixed specification. A one-way pallet is nailed together, lighter and cheaper, and designed for a single trip with no expectation of being returned.

Do lightweight pallets meet phytosanitary requirements for export?

Yes, they can be built with heat treatment carried out in line with ISPM 15 / NIMF-15 requirements whenever the export destination requires it, particularly for shipments outside the European Union. Let us know the destination country when ordering so we can confirm whether your shipment needs this treatment.

Can I order pallets in custom dimensions?

Yes, alongside the standard 800x1200 mm and 1000x1200 mm formats, we can build to custom sizes based on your load, container, or production-line equipment, provided the order volume justifies it.

What's the usual lead time?

Lead time depends on order volume, the format requested, and whether additional heat treatment is needed. We confirm an indicative estimate once we receive your enquiry, as we don't work to fixed guaranteed lead times across all orders.

What load capacity do these pallets support?

Capacity varies with the format and design requested, with an indicative static load capacity of up to roughly 1,000 kg on standard formats. For heavier or irregular loads, ask us about the most suitable design.

Can I combine this order with EPAL pallets or industrial packaging in the same shipment?

Yes, many customers combine one-way pallets with European EPAL/EURO pallets or with industrial wood crates and packaging in a single order, depending on the needs of each product line they export.

What's your minimum order for one-way lightweight export pallets?

One-way export pallets are typically ordered by the pallet-load or full truckload, since that's how most export shipments use them, but a smaller trial quantity is usually possible on request if you want to test the format first.
